About Beyond the White Coat

Career advice is only worth as much as the person giving it. Here is who wrote this, why it exists, and how it is put together.

Rakesh K Raman, MD

Physician leader in patient safety and clinical science

Rakesh K Raman is a physician who has built his career in the biopharmaceutical industry, advancing through roles of increasing responsibility and leadership across patient safety and clinical sciences.

Over more than a decade in industry, he has progressed from an individual contributor in drug safety to executive leadership of global patient safety, medical monitoring and site engagement. His work centres on the disciplines that determine whether a medicine can be given to patients safely: causality and benefit–risk assessment, safety surveillance and signal evaluation, and the medical oversight of clinical trials. He has led these functions across clinical-stage development programmes, building and directing the teams responsible for them.

His route into the industry began at the end of medical school. Despite a genuine love for patient care, it became clear that his skill set and professional interests aligned more closely with the biopharmaceutical space — and in particular with the point where drug development meets its consequences for patients. Understanding how a compound moves through development, and how the decisions made along the way ultimately shape a patient’s experience of a medicine, was the work he wanted to do.

Making that transition, however, proved deeply challenging. There was very little available to guide the move: few resources, little reliable information, and minimal content which explained what these careers actually involved or how someone with clinical training might enter them.

Beyond the White Coat exists because that should not be the case. It is intended as a playbook — a clear and honest go-to platform for any healthcare professional ready to embark on the same journey.

Why this exists

Most clinicians discover these careers by accident — a chance conversation, a recruiter's message, a colleague who disappeared from the ward and turned up at a company two years later. The information is scattered across job descriptions, LinkedIn posts and regulatory PDFs, and almost none of it is written for someone still deciding whether to go.

This site is an attempt to put the whole picture in one place: what the work actually is, what the ladder looks like, what the technical craft involves, and how to make the move credible on paper.

How this is built

  • Sourced from primary material. The technical sections are grounded in regulatory guidance from the FDA, EMA and ICH rather than summarised from other career sites.
  • Career ladders from real postings. Titles and progressions are compiled from current job listings across pharma and biotech, not invented hierarchies.
  • Journeys are labelled composites. The transition stories are illustrative patterns drawn from common routes, not interviews with named individuals — and they say so.
  • Affiliate links are disclosed. Some resource links earn a commission. They are marked, and nothing is recommended solely because it pays.
